It All Started With a Vision | Getting Outside, Together

A few years ago, while living in Ipswich, Massachusetts, I had a realization that had nothing to do with horsepower or social media and everything to do with connection. Families were busy. Kids were indoors. Life felt rushed. And despite being surrounded by some of the most scenic roads and outdoor landscapes in New England, there were very few reasons pulling people outside together—especially fathers and their kids.

I didn’t want another car group. I wanted a reason to get outside, explore, and spend intentional time together.

That vision became the foundation of what would eventually grow into Dad Driven.

Exploration as the Starting Line

It began simply: inviting a small group of like-minded dads and families to meet up for a drive. Not to race. Not to show off. But to go somewhere, to follow coastal roads, breathe fresh air, and end the day somewhere worth lingering.

The focus wasn’t the destination. It was the journey.

We planned scenic routes through Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Roads that encouraged conversation, curiosity, and slowing down. The final stops were outdoor-friendly locations where families could gather, kids could run around, and parents could talk without watching the clock.

What surprised me wasn’t how many cars showed up, it was who showed up.

When Getting Outside Became a Family Ritual

Dads brought their kids along. Entire families followed. Some had grandparents meet them at the end. What started as a simple outdoor meetup turned into a shared ritual, one that blended exploration, camaraderie, and quality time.

Kids weren’t glued to screens.
Parents weren’t distracted.
Everyone was present.

That’s when it clicked: this wasn’t about cars. It was about creating space for life lessons to happen naturally.

Teaching kids how to appreciate the outdoors.
Showing them how to plan, prepare, and follow through.
Letting conversations happen in motion, without pressure.

Those miles mattered.

Camaraderie, Not Competition

As the community grew, one thing became clear: people weren’t coming for status or spectacle. They came for belonging.

There was an unspoken understanding among the dads: we were all trying to do better, not just as drivers, but as fathers, partners, and leaders for our families. The road became neutral ground. No titles. No ego. Just shared experiences and mutual respect.

That camaraderie is still the heartbeat of Dad Driven today.

The Life Lessons That Stay With You

Time outside has a way of teaching lessons you can’t script.

Patience when plans change.
Responsibility when others are counting on you.
Awareness of your surroundings.
Gratitude for simple moments.

These are lessons kids absorb without being lectured—and lessons fathers relearn alongside them.

Dad Driven exists to create more of those moments.

A Vision That Keeps Moving Forward

Even after relocating with my family to Arizona, that original vision hasn’t changed. If anything, it’s grown stronger.

Dad Driven is about raising families who value experiences over distractions, exploration over routine, and time together over everything else. Whether it’s a drive, a hike, a campsite, or a quiet road at sunrise. The goal is the same: get outside and build memories that last.

This is about legacy, not likes.
Presence, not perfection.
Movement, not noise.

Here’s to getting outside.
Here’s to exploration.
Here’s to raising families who are driven by more than speed.
